National celebration of Seafarers, the forgotten workforce
Andrew Wright, CEO Mission to Seafarers on Sea Sunday 2013
Sea Sunday is a national event giving people the chance to thank the brave and dedicated seafarers that deliver over 90% of the food and goods the UK uses every day.
Special services, fundraising events and ship blessings will be held all around the country. Over 600 churches will be supporting the Mission to Seafarers on the day.
Seafaring can be a tough, isolated and hazardous career. The work of a seafarer is one of the most difficult and challenging jobs in the world. They may be away from family and friends for months or even years at a time.
The Mission to Seafarers supports seafarers in need in over 260 ports in 71 countries around the world, through its global network of chaplains and volunteers who offer a warm welcome, practical and financial support, advocacy services, access to legal advice and family liaison.
The Mission is entirely funded by voluntary donations.
We are working with the British Marine Federation to promote the weekend events on regional radio stations.
The UK boating industry is throwing open its doors this weekend. It’s giving people free opportunities to try water sports and boating.
This is the first national On the Water event.
People can try anything from a canoe, a canal boat to a cruising yacht.
More information including an interview with Sarah Dhanda is on the OTW website here:

Latest statistics from the British Marine Federation show revenue is slightly up … it’s the first increase since 2009. In all, UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry sales are worth two point eight billion pounds to the UK economy.
The MP was visiting the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show … where exhibitors say they’re cautiously optimistic.
